Obesity is a serious issue in America, as it is the continent with the highest percentage of obese people. Reasons are many, like fast food or body size disproportion, but a contributory factor like portion distortion is also identified. People don't choose small portions anymore and marketers have taken advantage of this to sell more. We can have the bigger portions for just 25 cents or any other small sum of money.
Measuring the food in front of us is often a challenge, especially when you are dining out. Neither the restaurant's personnel nor your table companion will agree with weighting your food at the table, even if you are a
weight loss surgery patient.
Therefore, it is good to find some fixed measures after which you estimate your food's weight/size. Familiar items can be very helpful with this.
The baseball or a woman's fist can tell you how much is a serving of a vegetables or fruits. A deck of cards or the palm of your hand without the fingers are illustrative for a serving of meat, fish or poultry. A golf ball or a large egg is one quarter cup of dried fruits or nuts and a tennis ball is approximately a half cup of ice cream. The computer mouse is about the size of a small potato and the CD is like a serving of pancake or small waffle. A teaspoon of peanut butter is like a thumb dip and a serving of fish is like a check book.
Comparing food to the familiar daily items makes it easier for you to estimate the quantity of food you need. You need to be size-wise and enjoy food in smaller portions.
