Type 2 diabetes medication was shown to be eliminated by bariatric surgery, costs associated with the medication being also eliminated.

There four types of diabetes, but the most prevalent is type 2 diabetes, as 90% of American diabetics and world diabetic have it. Their body does not produce insulin any more, a hormone which helps obtaining energy from sugars and not only. The pancreas tires out in time and controlling the disease is not able to be done with exercise and modified diet, as before, but injections, which cost a lot.

One major contributor to type 2 diabetes is obesity with an BMI of over 40, which is morbid obesity. The risk for a morbidly obese person is two times to ten times higher, depending on how severe obesity is.

The percentage of cases in which medication was eliminated was 74% of over 2000 patients one year after surgery and 84.5 % at 2 years after surgery, this is what the Archives of Surgery published, but there are other studies which mention the same thing: weight loss surgery can cure type 2 diabetes.

Still, there is more of this study to be happy about: the financial implications of weight loss surgery (such as gastric bypass or gastric band surgery) are great: from the average health care sum per person of $6,376, the costs decreased by 34.25% or $2,179 after one year and by 70.5% or $4,498 after two years.

These are great arguments for introducing free coverage for bariatric surgery, we just need to see followup results and have the arguments they can't refuse.
